St Regulas, Cromarty: Bonhoeffer Talks
Wednesday 28 May 2008

DIETRICH BONHOEFFER 1906 - 1945

A series of five sessions exploring the life and writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, led by Simon Evans and Ken Dupar at St Regulus Church, Cromarty Tuesdays, 7.30pm

27 May: Bonhoeffer the Man

The fascination of Bonhoeffer is the life he led, the dilemmas he faced, the relationships he maintained, the courage and composure he displayed. The validity of his message comes from the complicated, inspiring man he was.

3 June: Life Together

Bonhoeffer’s reflections on the meaning of Christian community are based on his life in an ‘underground’ seminary of the break-away Confessing Church.

10 June: Religionless Christianity

Forbidden to preach, teach or speak in public, Bonhoeffer sought ways of communicating the Christian faith outside traditional religious institutions.

17 June: Resisting the State

To Christians in Germany the state was invested with God’s authority. What does a Christian do when the state perpetrates genocide? Should Christians kill fellow Christians in an unjust war? Should Christians conspire to assassinate an evil dictator? Bonhoeffer faced these issues under the severest pressure and lived up to his difficult answers.

24 June: Bringing It Together

What does Bonhoeffer bring to our contemporary situation? Do we share his vision of Christ as ‘A man for others’? Who is Christ for us today?

We hope to have space and time to meditate on, and celebrate, this remarkable man and his vision of Jesus in a ‘world come of age’.
